Prevention

The purpose of preventative medicine is to try to keep you as healthy as possible and avoid disease. Please read on for different areas of prevention that we address.

Newborn Checks

If you deliver your baby in a hospital, the on-call pediatrician will round on the child in the hospital. After discharge, we like to see newborns in the clinic within 1-3 days to monitor weight gain and assess for feeding issues and jaundice. If you deliver your baby at home with a midwife, we prefer to see the baby within 24-48 hours of birth. Please call to schedule your newborn’s first clinic visit as soon as you are discharged from the hospital or soon after birth.

Well Child Checks

Regular Well Child Checks (WCC) are the cornerstone of thorough pediatric care and keep our kids healthy.  At every WCC, we address your concerns and assess the growth and development of your child.  We will discuss appropriate nutrition, safety, exercise and health maintenance options.  By seeing children often, we are able to intervene early if problems arise and provide ongoing guidance for the months and years to come.  We individualize all advice to you and your child to help ensure the most enjoyable and healthy childhood for your family.

Our WCC schedule coincides with the recommended vaccination schedule for the first 18 months of life.  These occur at 2 weeks and 2, 4, 6, 9 (no shots),  12,  15 and 18 months old.  Then we like to see the child every year starting at age 2 through age 18.  Adolescents typically need vaccinations at ages 11-12 and 16.

Sport Physicals

Clearance for sports participation is provided as part of a yearly well child check.  If you have any special circumstances regarding a need for sports clearance, please call us.

Complete Physicals for Adults

We recommend a complete physical exam every year for all adults.  At these visits, we focus on preventative care and explore the areas of your life that make up your health.  We address any acute or ongoing chronic issues and review any recommended testing.  In addition, we assess your immunization status and draw blood for any necessary tests.  Together, we come up with a personalized plan to help you be as fit as you can (or want to) be.
